Slick Salt Entertainment along with legendary label Slip N Slide (home of Trina, Plies and Rick Ross among others) announces the signing of singer/songwriter Shonie.

The current music scene is never destitute or in need of a new hip hop dance, cliché or music movement, however the entertainment industry would be non existent if new and innovative, possibilities, languages, and challenges were not developed through new musical talent. Hip Hop is always in search of that new sound and form of distinction and most importantly a female songstress who is not afraid to step outside your traditional “R&B” box and sing lyrics that represent not only the streets, but the ongoing struggle of women around the world. This distinction is found in Slip n Slide Records’ newcomer “SHONIE”.

Life for a woman is anything but easy, that’s why South Bronx, New York native “SHONIE” got an early start in her music career. At the tender age of nine years old, the young singer and her family moved to Miami, Florida and forged ahead towards a new scenery and outlook on life. During “SHONIE” and her families shift to South Florida; her mother recognized her daughters budding vocal talent. “My mom was heavily involved in the church, so it was only right that I join the church choir. It was at that time that my mom noticed my ability to carry a note. She then began to have me sing in front of different people to see if they would get the same reaction as she had after listening to me sing at church and around the house, and they all had the same response by saying, “That girl can SANG!!!” I had written my first song when I was 9 years old and finally got the chance to record it when my mom arranged for me to go into a real studio.” Inserts “SHONIE”

Immediately after moving to Miami, the young doe–eyed songstress began her longtime journey as a singer. At the age of 17, “SHONIE” was offered a recording deal with an independent record label in Miami named “South Beat Records”. It was there that she met her manager James Jackson of Slick Salt Entertainment, who released her nationally distributed mix tape, which was hosted by the infamous DJ Khaled. The female vocalist originally came onto the music scene as a rapper. “I have the gift to be versatile, so I plan on showing both sides.” As any aspiring vocalist/songwriter/rapper would do, “SHONIE” kept her musical goals at hand. To date she has worked with the likes of various nationwide celebrities including Hip-Hop Superstar Trina, on the tracks such as “Wish I never Met You”, Flo Rida, B5, Trick Daddy, Cool & Dre and more.

The inventive singer does not mind sharing her thoughts, secrets, or emotions to the world through her music. “I want to touch people all over the world with not only my vocal abilities, but my truth which is birthed through my lyrics. I want to be known as the popular songstress that is respected and successful for my sincerity that is displayed through my music.” Drawing inspiration from artist such as Beyonce, Aaliyah, Missy Elliot, and most importantly Betty Wright; “SHONIE” is definitely setting the bar high for her music fans to appreciate her individual sound and craft. “Betty Wright was one of the main reasons I started singing. I was very young when I first heard her sing, but her voice and her swagger were just incredible! I think that’s where I got my confidence and swagger from. I also loved her delivery on her vocals. “SHONIE” inserts in an earnest tone. When asked about future goals and objectives surrounding her career, “SHONIE” states that she “plans on branding herself as one of the greatest female entertainers that has ever blessed a microphone in this industry.”

In the journey of this long road we call life; everyone has to have an alternative motive, or great theory. “SHONIE’s” great theories consist of nothing more than making great music or better yet as she identifies it as …..”Bringing the ‘HEAT’ Nonstop.”

Britt Harkins “Hop Back Up”

Britt Harkins is 13 years old and lives in Virginia. She began dancing at 2 ½ and singing at age 6. Between the ages of 4 and 10, Britt time-shared her dancing and singing with gymnastics. She competed at the state-level in gymnastics through the age of 10, after which she made a decision to pursue her strongest passion, dancing and singing, exclusively. She has never looked back. Her first break came in 2006 when she was selected as a member of a local Radio Disney pop group.

This group performed throughout Hampton Roads and North Carolina, performing at concerts with big name artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Raven, The Jonas Brothers and The Cheetah Girls and Hannah Montana. With the abolition of the local Radio Disney group in 2007, Britt and two originals from the group were routinely booked on weekends, touring throughout the Tidewater and Hampton Roads areas, performing at community festivals, small businesses, malls, and other community events. Recently, Britt has decided to go for her dream and become a solo artist. She has two professional teenage back-up dancers and will continue to perform locally. Included in her song sets will be her first single “Hop Back Up.” At age 12, Britt recorded this single and recently followed it up with a music video.

Britt has a very soulful voice and enjoys singing R&B and the more soulful Pop music. Her favorite artists are Christina Aguilera and JoJo. Britt’s goal is to utilize her strong, seasoned voice and her hip-hop dance expertise to bring a clean edge to music for today’s teens. Her dream is to one day top the billboard charts and be heard on the airwaves throughout the Nation.

Smitty ft Chris Brown, Mario, & Jamie Foxx “Tell Me”

Smitty ft Chris Brown, Mario, & Jamie Foxx “Tell Me”

The road to rap stardom is paved with almosts, should haves and on second thoughts. Rapper/songwriter and J Records/Chameleon Entertainment signee Smitty (Varick D. Smith) seized all the opportunities presented to him since setting off on his road to rap stardom that traces back to Miami, where he was born and raised.

“I been writing forever,” says the 24 year old who started rapping when his age was a single digit and came into his own artistically in his teens. He had the smarts to enroll at Florida A&M University in 1997. However, his aspiration to become a full-fledged artist led him to switch coasts after only two and half years of school.

College wasn’t panning out for me so I went out to California to try to make this rap thing happen,” reveals the former Journalism major about his 2000 move to Los Angeles. A year or two of grinding out West to find a foothold in the rap industry led Smitty to the movie set of The Wash where Dr. Dre was busy acting. Sneaking on the set was relatively easy but getting into Dre’s ear for an impromptu audition proved to be an exercise in patience.

“We waited for him about 15, 16 hours, recalls Smitty. When we met him he was like Yeah it must be something cause y’all been out here all day.í I finally spit for him and two weeks later I was in the studio with him.”

The immediate result was Smitty penning songs for The Wash Soundtrack (Hollywood) as well as ghost writing verses for Dre’s now shelved Detox album. An offer to sign with Aftermath Records was extended but never came to fruition. “Everything was going smooth but it just didn’t pan out the way I wanted it, recalls Smitty. By the time we got around to something definite I had moved on to something else.”

That something else was connecting with Sean P. Diddy Combs, which resulted in penning an assortment of songs for P. Diddy including the smashes Shake Ya Tailfeather (w/ Nelly & Murphy Lee) and B2K’s Bump, Bump, Bump. Again, a record deal offer was forthcoming but Smitty played it cool, only heightening his rep.

His songwriting success is only part of the ingredients that have led to Smitty’s deafening buzz. Before meeting Dre he rapped for and became personal friends with veteran Hip-Hop legend Scarface. Then while dealing with Puff, Roc-A-Fella Records showed interest after his lyrical barbs impressed Jay-Z who became acquainted with Smitty since he was a member of Face Mob (Malice, Big Gee and Scarface with Jazzy Pha on production).

Now a solo artist, his Life of a Troubled Child debut album is sure to be only the beginning of a stellar career. Diamonds on My Neck has proven to be a bonafide club banger and was proclaimed the anthem for 2005’s Memorial Day Weekend by Miami DJ Irie from the Heat and WEDR-FM. Ghetto is a horn driven heater that features his buddy Scarface and Kanye West along with John Legend’s soulful crooning. Top shelf producers that include Timbaland, David Banner, Swizz Beatz, Kanye West and Manny fresh have been recruited to administer the forthcoming album’s production and properly match Smitty’s poignant lyricism.

Coming up in Miami, besides listening to local staples like 2 Live Crew and Jam Pony Express or his Southern icons like Geto Boyz and 8-Ball & MJG, Smitty consumed a steady diet of East Coast flavored rap music, which in turn influenced his own style. A lot of people say Iím like Biggie mixed with Scarface and I have lot of lyrical content, explains Smitty.

But there’s no denying Smittyís southern roots. A lot of Down South music is about the feel; grimy dirty music, says Smitty, before describing his own work. You’re going to hear lyrics, you’re going to hear melody, you going to hear samples, you going to hear passion in my music. The griminess I do have in me is from where I’m from. It’s Dirty South. Then I went out to LA and they just sprinkled me with their flavor. It’s a great combination, how could you lose?!.’

R&B artist Mario gets personal on 3rd album

R&B artist Mario gets personal on 3rd album

By Gail MitchellMon Jun 18, 5:23 PM ET

Celebrating his 21st birthday in June, R&B singer Mario is already dreaming about where he sees himself in the future.

“My biggest dream is to become heavy in commercial real estate — to sit back and watch my buildings go up,” he said.

For now, the multiplatinum-selling artist will have to be content watching his new single, “How Do I Breathe,” climb the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart (at No. 26) and Hot 100 Airplay (No. 69). The song is the lead track from Mario’s new album, “Go,” due August 21.

The project, his third for J Records, continues the teen-to-adult transition Mario began in late 2004 with the release of “Turning Point.” That album’s hallmark was the long-running R&B/pop crossover hit “Let Me Love You,” co-written by Ne-Yo.

Ne-Yo is among the collaborators on “Go,” having contributed the song “What’s It Gonna Be,” about a woman playing a guy at his own game. Additional producers and songwriters on the album include Akon, the Neptunes, Timbaland, Polow da Don and Sean Garrett. Under the banner of his production team the Nightriders, Mario also co-wrote several songs.

“This is an awesome time for us right now,” Mario (whose last name is Barrett) said when asked about his place amid such R&B artists as Tank, Lloyd, Ne-Yo and Akon. “We’re the next generation of Marvins, Stevies and Jackie Wilsons. It’s friendly competition where we’re unconsciously feeding off each other.”

PASSION AND INTROSPECTION

The more mature feel of “Go” underscores how much Mario has grown musically since those not-so-long ago teen idol days of early hits “Just a Friend 2002″ and “Braid My Hair.” One of the songs he co-wrote for the new album is possible second single “Kryptonite,” which he calls a “passionate anthem about a 20-year-old trying to stay in a committed relationship.”

The most surprising track is the introspective “Do Right,” co-written by Mario and produced by Akon. The song stems from a painful chapter in Mario’s life that he has been reluctant to discuss: his mother’s drug addiction.

“I wanted to do something that would allow my fans to come a bit closer,” he said. “I’m letting people know that I may have experienced some of the same things they have.”

So much so that he agreed to let MTV film a documentary on his family life. The film exposes what was happening behind closed doors as Mario, the oldest of several siblings, juggled a troubled home life in Baltimore while dreaming of a music career.

Mario has matured businesswise as well. In 2006, he sued former manager Troy Patterson and Patterson’s Third Street Music Group to void an “oppressive” production deal. The complaint charged that under the contract Mario signed with Patterson — who discovered and later sheltered a minor Mario during his mother’s bouts with drugs — the singer received only about $50,000 from the sale of more than 3 million records. Those units generated about $20 million for J Records. After Patterson filed a countersuit in April 2006, the dispute was settled in January 2007. Mario is now managed by J. Erving of J. Erving Group.

Now on the other side of those personal and business issues, Mario declares that he “definitely knows what I want and who I am. It’s about creating a legacy. As I experience more things, I’ll be able to relate more with people on a different level. Creating music for life; that’s more important than anything to me.”

Downtown Records-Kevin Michael

Downtown Records-Kevin Michael

Downtown Records, the independent label behind 2006’s album of the year, Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere, is proud to present Kevin Michael. Kevin, a 22 year old vocal prodigy with an incredible voice and persona, is from Chester, just outside Philadelphia. Kevin’s influences include Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Prince. He has previously recorded and performed with the Roots. While Kevin has a unique voice and style in a world all his own, fans of artists like Jon Legend, D’Angleo, Justin Timberlake, Akon, Black Eyed Peas and Usher will love Kevin Michael. The album features top urban producers including: Wyclef Jean (Fugees, Shakira), JR (Dr. Dre), The Clutch (Usher, Mary J. Blige, Omarion), Brian Kidd (T.I., Nappy Roots), Shea Taylor (Ne-Yo, Jay-Z), L-Rock (Lil John, Usher, Mariah Carey), Mike McHenry (Will I.Am, Fergie) and Bloodshy (Madonna, Britney Spears). Kevin Michael’s debut album is available Spring 2007 on Downtown/Atlantic Records.

In September 2006 at the CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment Conference, Kevin Michael played a stripped down set for select new media and mobile company representatives, who were blown away by Kevin’s performance. They view Kevin and his music as something very universal and multi-platform in the way that Gnarls Barkley is. Kevin was accompanied by Akil, a BET freestyle champion who beatboxes, plays acoustic guitar and raps.

Following up on the incredible response Kevin Michael received from all the mobile and online companies, Downtown took him to northern California where he met and performed for YouTube, Second Life, iTunes, Sugar Publishing and several key off line partners (The Gap, Old Navy ect).

The plan that has emerged from these meetings was designed to take advantage for new models of media consumption. Downtown is archiving as much content as possible (audio and video) in order to serve it to media and social networking communities in a way that is consistent with how they are consuming music – a deliberately Long Tail approach to creating a stockpile of Kevin content.

Forty songs have been recorded for Kevin’s album, most of which are published by Downtown. In addition, six acoustic versions of Kevin’s key songs backed by Akil on acoustic guitar and beatbox were recorded.

Kevin Michael’s image will be introduced through a series of inexpensive yet real, raw, and compelling viral videos to the Youtube audience, building up his own site and blowing up his MySpace page etc a la Gnarls. Initial videos will include in-world performances in Second Life and Doppelganger (in which Downtown has an equity investment); as well as series of live action video shorts including Kevin Michael busking Philadelphia, performing in his bedroom and singing to the ladies at Victoria’s Secret.

These videos will be distributed everywhere – You Tube, a Downtown Brightcove channel (in which Downtown has an equity investment via Allen & Co.), Revver – even experimenting with some ad-supported digital distribution platforms like intent to tap into Gnarls’ audience, create new fans, build awareness and capture all the data – without giving avay final versions of the songs (i.e. The Wyclef & Jerry Wonder produced single and video for “It Don’t Make Any Difference To Me”).

These events will all be news stories. Fortune ran a piece in their December 11th, 2006 issue on Downtown and how aggressively the label is contextualizing Kevin. Downtown will continue to take advantage of all the interest in Second Life and community-based consumption to connect the dots between the organic Gnarls Barkley on line experience and the more strategic way Downtown is creating the awareness for Kevin, utilizing these sites’ need for content.

At the same time as Downtown is building an on line community for Kevin Michael, a range of strategic on line partnerships are being pursued. These including Karmaloop (#1 urban online retailer), VW, The Gap/Old Navy, John Varvatos, Amp’d mobile, Nike, Oxygen and major ad agencies, including Crispin Porter, Wieden & Kennedy, Ogilvy etc.

Downtown will also develop Kevin Michael regionally in the Philadelphia market. Kevin Michael and his song “Philadelphia” are the stars of a million dollar campaign in January 2007 promoting Philadelphia and The Philadelphia Enquirer’s Phillycars.com.

All of this activity builds towards Kevin Michael’s single and album release, post Entourage. Fully produced songs and broadcast TV-ready videos will be monetized in traditional and non-traditional ways. The second layer of content rolled out via conventional radio and video outlets will capitalize on a pre-existing community of Kevin fans created with layer one of video and audio content. Setting up Kevin Michael prior to release in the digital, strategic and regional realms will give the context for his record to reach a significant audience and have traction.
