[Producer] - Blastah Beatz

Hip Hop isn’t dead, it just needs to be woken up and the best way to wake it up is by playing banging beats as loud as possible. That’s when Portugal’s own Blastah Beatz comes in. To be born in Europe in the late 80’s means growing up listening to the golden era of Hip Hop.

So to Blastah, this is the only kind of Hip Hop that should exist.

That’s why ever since he’s been layering sounds to create that perfect track that will make your head nod for days, Blastah has only been about that boom-bap sh*t.

This young producer has been on a mission. From digging up that sample that no one ever dared to flip to mixing it with the heaviest bass and the hardest drums, Blastah has been looking to hook up the best artists with the beats they deserved. So far, it’s been paying off as he’s building a strong reputation as one of the best foreign up-and-coming producers. Busta Rhymes, Inspectah Deck, Canibus, Joe Budden, Papoose, Del the Funky Homosapien, Cappadonna, Murs and Tragedy Khadafi are just some of the renown emcees who blessed some of Blastah’s productions.

In March 2008 Blastah was handpicked amongst hundreds to be part of a select group of 10 producers that took part in Money Management’s One Stop Shop Beat Battle in Phoenix, AZ. G-Unit production mastermind Sha Money XL and Chamillionaire were part of the panel of judges at the beat battle and they were all very impressed by Blastah’s skills.

Blastah Beatz is currently working on his debut album “Ph.D. in Beatmaking”, to be released during the Fall of 2010.

Hip-hop in the early ’90′s was just beginning to come into its own. Several artists helped pave the way for what is now a multi-billion dollar business, however the pioneers of the movement – MC’s like Premier and Pete Rock – not only had to learn, but they also had to make it, the hard way. Nothing came easy for them and they certainly never enveloped themselves in shallow praise or adulation, especially if they hadn’t done anything to deserve it, much like some of the rappers of today’s generation do. In this video, Pete Rock and Premier get personal prior to a show at the Liquidroom in Shibuya, Tokyo where they delve into all sorts of personal traumas, competition between each other and the hardships of embarking on a career chock-full of ups and downs, burdens and blessings.

Just Blaze speaks on the time he first met Jay-Z & Dame Dash.

He explains Dame’s account of their first meeting and how it’s different to his.

Later in the interview I ask Just the first time he met Jay Electronica. Just Blaze couldn’t remember and we decided that Jay Electronica was in fact the 13th Cylon (the master Cylon).

Alchemist recounts the first time he met Mobb Deep saying “these dudes are short” and thinking he could fit in because of it. There’s also a nice story of meeting Eminem for the first time who was rocking his “John Lennon” spectacles. All Eminem was doing was trying to push his “man” who turned out to be Royce 5’9.

M-Phazes is the perfect example of a diamond in the rough. Born and raised in the Gold Coast of Australia and relatively isolated from Hip-Hop culture, M-Phazes has carved a strong niche for himself that has allowed his production to be heard on a global scale.

Drawing inspiration from legendary producers such as Battlecat, Pete Rock and the late J-Dilla, M-Phazes has has formulated his own sound over the years that can be defined by soulful melodies coupled with loose, smacking drums.

Landing his first U.S. placement in 2005 on Supastition’s “Chain Letters”, M-Phazes has been on a steady climb and hasn’t looked back. In March of 2008, M-Phazes earned himself a first place victory at Sha Money’s prestigious One Stop Shop Producers Conference Beat Battle, an event that’s held annually in Phoenix, Arizona. M-Phazes’ production was judged by a panel of legendary producers and artists that consisted of DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Swizz Beats, DJ Toomp, No I.D, Hi-Tek, Don Cannon, Chamillionaire and of course, Sha Money. “M-Phazes blew me away with his sound” – Jake One.

The final round of the battle was held on Sunday, March 9th, a date which marked the 11th anniversary of the passing of the late Notorious B.I.G. In remembrance of this date, M-Phazes prepared a track titled ‘Brooklyn’ that was played in honor of the late Biggie. From the first kick to the final snare, this tribute beat caused the entire judging panel and audience to literally leap out of their seats! This track received a standing ovation that secured M-Phazes victory. Shortly after, this tribute beat went on to become the backdrop for Joell Ortiz’s forthcoming single off his new album which has since been licensed for the major motion picture Brooklyn’s Finest featuring Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke & Wesley Snipes (directed by Antwon Fuqua, Training Day).

Since the One Stop, M-Phazes has received an Aria Award and a gold record for his production on Bliss N Eso’s “Flying Colors album, has had his production featured on two college chart topping singles, has signed a landmark deal with Mushroom Publishing and has landed several placements, including a major label placement with Amerie (Feenix Rising Entertainment/Island Def Jam Music Group) as well as a co-production credit alongside super producer JR Rotem (Belugah Heights) for his artist Mann.

To date, M-Phazes has built a very strong discography that includes placements with several key players in today’s hip-hop marketplace that include Pharoahe Monch, CL Smooth, M.O.P., Mela Machinko, Royce Da 5’9″, Emilio Rojas, Heltah Skeltah, Donny Goines, Cory Gunz, Elzhi (Slum Village), Freeway, Marvin Priest (son of Maxi Priest), Termanology, Sean Price, Sadat X and more.

M-Phazes is living proof that no matter where you’re from, you can make an impact on the rest of the world. As his dreams become a reality, M-Phazes places no boundaries on his craft that he hopes will allow him the opportunity to work with artists that define a wide brush stroke of today’s urban music climate.
